John Wyer had managed the Aston Martin race program throught the 1950's, and moved to Ford's program thereafter. In 1967 he hooked up with Gulf Oil to create a privateer Ford team. Their first effort was a road-spec GT40 that was converted back to race trim for the 1967 Daytona 24 hour race. They then went on to create their own GT40-based chassis, the Mirage M1.
The Daytona car did not feature the famous powder blue, but was the "corporate" blue of Gulf Oil. Jouef/Eagle's Race produced a simple model of this car.

The Gulf Porsche 917's are some of the most iconic cars of all time. Although they did NOT win Le Mans in real life, but did so in the movie...
The Gulf 917's from 1970 Le Mans are probably the largest gap in all of 1:43 collecting. The rear end of these cars was not "stock", so a special casting would be needed to produce them.

After the 3-litre limit was established in 1972, the team switched to a detuned version of the famous Formula One engine. After a few lean years, a Le Mans victory in 1975 validated their concept.
